Scenery and Atmosphere of Mammoth Lakes Area
The charm of Hilltop Hot Springs lies in its intimate setting.
Unlike some of the larger, more developed hot springs, Hilltop retains a sense of tranquility and solitude.
The surrounding landscape is a mix of rolling hills and distant peaks, creating a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
On clear days, you can see for miles, making it a great spot for both relaxation and photography.
Getting There
Hilltop Hot Springs is easily accessible.
From Mammoth Lakes, head south on US-395 and take Benton Crossing Road where you’ll see the Little Green Church.
Look for a dirt road turn-off on the left about 3.5 miles in.
The drive to the first parking area is relatively short, about 0.2 miles and very manageable with most vehicles driving slow.
A high-clearance vehicle would make the short drive easier and is definitely recommended if conditions are snowy or wet.
You’ll see the path entrance at the right at the end of the first parking area.
There’s also another parking area past the entrance if you prefer a more secluded parking space.
Visibility from the Parking Lot
If you know where to look, the pool is visible from the parking lot, guiding you towards your relaxing destination.
Look towards the top of a little sandy hill where you’ll see the steam rising from the hot spring if the air temperature is cool.
The steam can be your guide if the weather is cold.
Length of the Walk to the Pool
From the parking area, it’s a short walk to the hot springs, approximately 200 yards.
The path is distinct and easy to follow when there’s no snow, taking you through a short and scenic route with minimal elevation change, making it accessible for most visitors.
During snowy conditions, the path may be less visible, so having a GPS or a map can be helpful when there’s less visitors.
What to Expect at Hilltop Hot Springs Pool
Upon arrival, you’ll find a small but inviting hot spring pool.
The water is crystal clear and hot, perfect for a therapeutic soak.
The pool itself is constructed with rocks and cement, creating a natural feel while providing a sturdy structure.
The source of the hot spring is piped in from a nearby geothermal vent with a steady flow of hot water.
Temperature of the Water
The water temperature varies but typically hovers around 100-105 degrees Fahrenheit.
During my visit in June, it was too hot during the day to be soaking more than 10 minutes.
But the source is guided in by a pipe fitted with a gate valve so you can adjust the flow of the thermal water or simply move the pipe out of the pool and wait for the water to cool down before getting in.

Yes, dogs are welcome, but please keep them on a leash and clean up after them to maintain the area’s pristine condition.
I always wondered how people feel about dogs being inside the pool. How do you feel about it?
